In many countries around the world, the works of Eric Ravilious have come out of copyright this year. He died in 1942 when his aircraft went missing off Iceland while he was making war paintings. An artist in multiple disciplines, his greater legacy dwells in watercolors. Eric Ravilious painted England in that changing moment between the world wars. He served both masters; his own time, in his own England. He confirms Englishness in art, where the power often comes from restraint while the real stuff lies beneath the surface. Having produced a substantial body of work in his thirty-nine years, including hundreds of wood engravings and nearly 100 watercolors, we can only imagine what he might have produced had he lived beyond 1942.
